Staircase Reconstruction
The reconstruction of an historic staircase in a mid-19th century townhouse in Manhattan.
The historic staircase was no longer structurally sound and would not ft the newly renovated spaces properly. However, the client wished to save as much of the historic handrail system as possible and re-install it onto newly fabricated curved stairs.Fifty Three Restorations documented the existing salvaged handrail parts and, working backwards from those dimensions, fabricated & installed the new stairs. New matching handrail/balustrade parts replaced those that were not salvageable or no longer fit the new floors. Those new parts were fabricated and installed onto the new stairs.
